A brief history on Epping Industrial, Cape Town

Very few industrial areas in South Africa have as much history to the expansion of the country as Epping. This highly sought after industrial zone’s first stages of development started in the later years of the 1940’s. However development at that point seemed to be remarkably slow so by the early 1950’s the same location became famous for other reasons most notably the Gunners Circle which soon became a popular car racing track in the area.

It’s believed that the first race that took place at this iconic racing track was held on the 2nd of January 1951 and there were regular racing meetings as industries were yet to see the potential behind Epping as a key industrial location. Unfortunately for car racing enthusiasts this only lasted until the 1st of January 1958. Fortunately industries started seeing the potential in the area due to its prominence to key locations in the greater Cape Town vicinity, so the racing cars moved out to make way for industry and commerce.

Since then some of Africa’s and South Africa’s leading companies have made Epping their home including Nampack a formidable packing company as well as Distell Ltd, AVI Ltd and Afrox.

Today Epping is widely regarded as one of the best locations for industrial businesses and the area is strewn with commercial and industrial parks and developments which have seen people from all over the city commuting to the important business area. Popular brewing company Devil’s Peak have just opened up a premises in Epping showing the area is becoming more then just about big industry.

“The move from our 700 square metre location at the foot of Devil’s Peak, home of the original Salt River Taproom to our brand new 6500 square meter facility was quite the adventure!” – www.devilspeakbrewing.co.za. This is a clear indication of the prominence of this area and how it’s growing to be a Cape Town hotspot not just for those involved in industry but also those looking for entertainment and culture.
