Going off the grid - save money and the environment

The city of Cape Town came extremely close to the dreaded day zero, however recent winter rains have subsided this dire situation somewhat. This doesn’t mean that precautions are out the way and according to various news sources Capetonians still are urged to be as vigilant as possible when it comes to preserving this undeniably valuable life-giving resource. What role do industries have to play in this obvious dilemma? How can factory owners enable themselves to become self-sufficient and off the grid? And most importantly how will being self-sustaining help save the environment whilst also helping your industrial business save much-needed funds. Below is an article with a few helpful tips on how factory or warehouse owners in the Cape Town and Paarden Eiland can go off the grid and save much-needed money, energy and our earth's precious resources.

Installing your own solar system

South Africa within the last few years has seen various problems with keeping up the demands for electricity. Load-shedding has been an issue for so many varying reasons not just for people living in residential areas but for industrial and commercial operations as well. According to solafuture.co.za “electricity tariffs have increased on average 9% per annum for the last 5 years” -Sola Editor July 27th 2018. The same news source states that this could rise further by September. For more information on how to become more self-sufficient in terms of energy usage and solar power consult these two articles below:

Off the grid water supply

With the city of Cape Town being one of if not the only internationally renown city on the planet to nearly run out of water, its safe to say that’s it's vitally important for industrial businesses to either conserve as much water as possible or go off the grid entirely. There are numerous ways in which one can achieve this and one would be naturally to store rainwater for redistribution and use in various ways throughout your industrial operation. It would seem some corporate companies are already doing their bit towards water conservation and sustainability. One such company is Old Mutual and according to an article published off iol.co.za recently, they are the first to do something of this nature within the corporate sphere.

“Old Mutual’s Pinelands office has gone off the City of Cape Town’s water grid. Old Mutual launched its new Water Filtration Plant at its Mutual Park office in Pinelands on Monday, the first corporate-based waste-to-drinking-water filtration facility in South Africa, which means that the 166 000m² office, accommodating more than 9 000 employees and contractors is now officially operating off the grid”. -Joseph Booysen 14th of August  2018.

Save and make money by recycling

Its widely known that recycling is vitally important for conservation and sustainability. However very few know the fact that it also has huge potential to become a massive revenue generator as well. According to an article published off  http://www.infrastructurene.ws entitled  SA’s waste sector has many untapped business opportunities the potential for recycling revenue is massive.

“South Africa’s current waste economy is estimated to be worth R15 billion and provides 29,833 people with employment. However, the GreenCape report suggests that R17 billion worth of resources could be unlocked if 100% of the identified 13 waste streams could be recycled”. -http://www.infrastructurene.ws
