John Dube City set to raise the profile of the Ekurhuleni area

The Ekurhuleni area, also known as Kempton Park and the location where prominent, industrial area Spartan is situated is set for a major overhaul. In an article published on kemptonexpress.co.za, it states that R35-billion will be spent on the project which is being called John Dube City.

Named after John Langalibalele Dube who was born on the 11th of February 1871 in Inanda, just outside of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. Founded the South African Native National Congress which would eventually become the African National Congress. Dube a poet, writer, philosopher, journalist, and politician is also noted for starting the Ilanga lase Natal Newspaper, which today is known as Ilanga and is a popular isiZulu publication from Independent Newspapers chain.

“The land on which development is to get underway was acquired by the city of Ekurhuleni in the late ’90s, for development purposes. The total size of the land available for the proposed John Dube Development Precinct is approximately 497.22 hectares. The John Dube development Company will be the developer in the project” - www.dailymaverick.co.za.

The development plans to transform the area and help in the housing backlog of the expanse as an additional 10 000 houses are set to be built. In addition to this a university, a civic centre, seven primary schools, three secondary schools, 15 public facilities, multiple transportation stations, 53 parks, botanical gardens and gardens, a hotel, a public hospital, an industrial district and an entertainment park are also on the cards.  The project was inaugurated towards the end of last year and is still in its infant stages of completion.

“John Dube City would benefit residents of KwaThema, Duduza and Taskane. Elderly people, the disabled, child-headed households and people from the communities, who applied in 1996 (for low-cost housing) would be prioritized” - kemptonexpress.co.za.

Prominent industrial areas that fall within the greater Ekurhuleni region will also see infrastructure upgrades hence the initiative will benefit other sectors not just the housing or educational division. Spartan is one such area which will benefit from this massive upgrade project. The area is already a leading industrial node due to its proximity to Africa’s biggest airport the OR Tambo International Airport which is rated as the 37th best in the world for 2017 by Skytrax and the world airport awards.
