Mega brand Levi's still favours Epping

It's a little-known fact that Epping, situated not from the centre of Cape Town used to be a hub within the textile industry. A lot has changed since those days, however, another little-known fact is that Epping is the location for the last international manufacturing warehouse for the highly regarded international jean company Levi’s. This is according to Moneyweb.co.za who recently published an article entitled “Last Levi’s Factory Standing” -A beacon of productivity in the Cape written by Sasha Planting. The article states how various contributing factors have seen major changes within various industries which has forced the pivotal clothing company to shut down numerous factories worldwide.

“The Levi Strauss factory in Epping, Cape Town is a ‘last man standing’ in that it is the last factory that the global group owns and operates itself. Over the last 15 years, Levi’s has closed factories from the US to the Philippines as global demand has softened, competition increased and the costs of the labour intensive manufacturing process rose. Global manufacture is now outsourced to literally hundreds of factories from Argentina to Vietnam”. -Planting (2018).

The article also explains the process of manufacturing these world-class jeans and how the mega brand is highly consciousness when it comes to staff and how they are treated. Its believed that salaries are generally a fair deal higher than other international textile brands and Levi’s are proud of this fact.

That being said interest for industrial property in Epping is extremely high and due to the fact that mega companies utilize the region as their South African operational base its no wonder that there are very few industrial properties left. This was around the 40’s and 50’s. It's quite incredible that the location has transformed so drastically and today the region is seen to be a powerhouse for any industrial operation. Epping is widely regarded as being one of the best located industrial areas in the Western Cape and its also within close proximity to all major roadways and transport links, this is another contributing factor as to why demand in Epping is so high for industrial purposes.
